Flowers For Algernon Essay |
In "Flowers For Algernon" by Daniel Keyes, Charlie is a 37 year old man who is trying to expand his limited knowledge and understanding of others. Along the way of figuring out more of the world he lives in, Charlie will end up seeing the truth of why Joe and Frank are his friends and why the people around him act the way they do.
Before the surgery, Charlie was considered a feeble-minded jester because of his slow way of comprehending everything around him leading him to cause problems where he went as well as constant though misunderstood teasing. One time at a bar," Joe Carp said I shoud show the girls how I mop out the toilet in the factory and he got me a mop. I showed them and everyone laffed when I told that Mr Donnegan said i was the best janitor he ever had because i like my job abd do it good and never come late or miss a day except for my operashun. I said Miss Kinnian always said Charlie be proud of your job because you do it good. Everybody laffed and we had a good time and they gave me lots of drinks and Joe said Charlie is a card when hes potted. I dont know what that means but everybody likes me and we have fun. I cant wait to be smart like my best friends Joe Carp and Frank Reilly. I don't remember how the party was over but i think i went out to buy a newspaper and coffe for Joe and Frank and when I came back there was no one their." This quote shows what Charlie's considered friendship actually is. After the surgery, Charlie's brain didn't seem to enhance much at first though it gradually started to build up. It ended up leading Charlie to discover the truth about his so called 'friends' when he was invited to this party,"We had a lot of fun for a while. Joe said I should dance with Ellen and she would teach me the steps. I fell a few times and I couldn't understand why because no one else was dancing besides Ellen and me. And all the time I was tripping because somebody's foot was always sticking out. Then when i got up I saw the look on Joe's face and it gave me a funny feeling inside my stumack. "He's a scream," one of the girls said. Everybody was laughing. Frank said," I ain't laughed so much since we sent him off for the newspaper that night at Muggy's and ditched him"."Look at him. His face is red"."He's blushing. Charlie is blushing"."Hey Ellen, what'd you do to Charlie? I never saw him act like that before". I didn't know what to do or where to turn. Everyone was looking at me and laughing and I felt naked. I wanted to hide myself. I ran out into the street and I threw up. Then I walked home. It's a funny thing I never knew that Joe and Frank and the others liked to have me around all the time to make fun of me. Now i know what it means when they say 'to pull a Charlie Gordon'. I'm ashamed." Sadly, Charlie learned in experience that his friends only had him around as entertainment for themselves by misusing his slower mind. "Flowers For Algernon" is a story about Charlie Gordon, a middle aged man trying to fit in when others around him seem to only use him for their own gain. The incidents before and after the surgery led to where Charlie is in the end, still trying to be smart even with all the twists and turns it led him through. |
The guy with the Clementine |

He is now 82 years old and still living in Retro City by himself as his wife had become an evil cotton candy villain 30 or so years back. He goes about his life now as a retired old man who still believes the city needs him. Despite the time passed, he still wears his super suit wherever he goes, still drives his machine gun car, and still has fights with his old nemesis's, Paula Pancake and Warthog. Ever since the three retired and Claire had gone to the outside world to become an evil genius, they would meet up with each other for games like poker and black jack. Bizarre man was better at card games then tile so he would sometimes have extra coins hanging around the house to pay the bets made before the games. Now than, our hero, who people still call Bizarre Man, has returned home from a tiring game of cards. A faint jingle of coins could be heard in the silent house as he dropped the seven quarters into his lamp-looking bowl. His footsteps echoed as he walked through his living room and over to the platinum counter. Writing paragraph |
There are many reasons to write though I do it because I like not having to talk and my mom motivates me to try things that she does.
Communication shouldn't depend on voice along to get the message across which is why mail, letters, notes, and etc. are needed. People who are mute use writing as a way to talk to others when they don't use sign language. Sometimes it is urgent to stay quiet though you may need to know something; a note could be used to pass along the needed information. Writing is a basic necessity for most of humanity for a big reason, news needs to travel. My mother is the editor for a magazine called Special Events and helps spread information that others can learn from. There is a lot of things to learn about and a few privileged enough help make it be known to others. Writing is a basic and common thing that spreads information and helps connect people all around the world, sometimes even beyond. |
Final Essay |
Many cases in history have divided the opinions of others on whether or not love and compassion are actual necessities to humanity. Humanity itself has lasted a long period of time though we wouldn’t have survived this far without love and compassion for multiple reasons however many disagree, saying they aren’t vital to our species and daily life. Gerda’s brother’s selfless last words to her and Elie’s relationship with his father show just how much love and compassion to do, especially in their time of need.
In One Survivor Remembers by Gerda Weissmann, we listen to a few of her stories about the Holocaust, including the faithful words said by Gerda’s brother before he left that seem to be helpful though useless in both opinions,” Be strong and look after our parents”. Despite the fact that he was about to be taken away to work and die, he only cared about the fate of his family instead of his own. While we may not know it, she may have taken his words to heart and used it as a motivation to help her through those times. Night by Elie Wiesel shows bits and pieces of Elie’s time in the tartarus of reality alongside till death with his father who he kept a close relationship to that in some people’s opinions motivated him for the majority of his time there, even if some speculate he was only following his will to live,” I had no right to let myself die. What would he do without me? I was his sole support(Elie 87)”. Though Elie is on the brink of death, he still cares for his father and is concerned for his own well being. Because he stuck with his father throughout his time in the concentration camps, he had a motivation to keep going on that led him to live past the Holocaust and to almost our time, granting him an oddly long life. Another example in the retold story Night By Elie Wiesel, we see Alphonse who was “A young man... totally devoted to ‘his’ block. Whenever he could, he would ‘organize’ a cauldron of soup for the young, the weak…(Elie 51)”. While most people would only care about themselves in this situation, Alphonse wishes to help others and does to the best of his ability. It is a caring thing and something that warms hearts to know people are helping even during the worst of times. Throughout humanity, love and compassion have coexisted together and helped build ,but also destroy bonds making it a necessity in some people’s opinions however a luxury in others. Humanity in some opinions couldn’t have lasted this long without love and compassion which makes Elie’s bonds with his father and Gerda’s kind-hearted brother good examples of what they can do in people's lives. |
